Take It Outside!

Never been a smoker. Always have been annoyed with people who light up and start smoking in socially unacceptable places. One of which, as I presently live here in Greece, is the habit of smoking at the dinner table. Although ‘Finding Nemo’ was not the starting point, it was a highlight that made me think about the puffer fish. I have always seen these strange fish as funny, and when I see them deflated, it seems more odd than when they have their bellies full of air.

I think a connection was made from my previous artwork; “Fly in My soup” of the bellowing puffs of smoke put out by cigar smokers. There formed a picture in my mind of the huffing and puffing of clouds of smoke associated with cigars, and a connection struck me to the puffer fish. I saw it’s big belly like a sack of air full of smoke. The thought continued in wondering what would happen if they did in fact smoke. Would they have these wonderful laws to bar smoking inside? So, where would outside be for a fish; a puffer fish.

The image grew of (unfortunately not of a cigar) a cigarette on a periscope type cigarette holder sticking out of the water. The image was quite a complex one to complete. Trying to get the correct look of the water and reflection on the top of the fish. It seemed to work out well.
